Java Runtime

Many computers already have Java installed (type "java -version" in a shell or DOS window). This program works with Java 1.4 or newer. You can upgrade or install Java from Sun using the "Get the JDK download" link at the top of the page.

Thunderbird Add-on install

  • Thunderbird Add-on

Use Thunderbird's "Extensions" manager (Tools -> Extensions) to "Install" the .xpi file. Select the spam_complaint.xpi file, wait for the 5 second countdown then select "Install." The extension will be installed when you restart Thunderbird. Restart before continuing to the next steps below.

Loading SPAM Messages

The Add-on will add options to:

  • Load selected message or messages

Left-click on a SPAM message or select multiple messages using shift + left-Click and ctrl + left-click. After at least one message is selected, right+click and select "Spam Complaint -> Load selected message(s)."

This program prevents the user from loading messages more than once and therefore sending duplicate Spam Complaint messages.

  • Load all messages in a folder

Click on any folder containing only Junk mail. Next, click on the "Tools" drop-down, select the "Spam Complaint" sub-menu, then select on "Load Selected Folder (everything)."

  • Launch GUI

The "Launch GUI" option will start the graphical user interface.

Outbound Mail

  • Mail Account

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. You will need to add your email account here before sending Spam Complaints. Information for this account is probably in Thunderbird's "Account Settings" under "Outgoing Server (SMTP)." You can select a server from this screen then copy the server name, port, user name, and secure connection type over to your Mail Account in Spam Complaint.

TLS may be implemented in the future. Please email a request.

  • Google Mail (GMail) provides free services for sending and downloading email. We can use the service to send email.
    • GMail requires a secure connection and password authentication. Check "password authentication" and select SSL above. The GMail port for SSL is 465 (the default).
    • The "User" login must include the domain (@gmail.com).

Updates

Occasionally, use the extension manager to find new updates. Updates will not cause the loss of settings or messages.
